Outlaws BBQ
The Top List of Best BBQ Restaurants - Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX

by Rita Cook

Anyone who says BBQ and Texas don’t go hand in hand just doesn’t know anything about the philosophy of eating in the Lone Star State. Take that one step further and you will find that the Dallas/Fort Worth area has some of the best BBQ restaurants in the entire area. From the mouthwatering aroma that you will likely get a whiff of blocks from the restaurant to the actual BBQ experience – the folks in the Metroplex believe in mouthwatering taste and there is nothing quite like BBQ, BBQ sauce and all the extra trimmings that go with it to make that happen.

Ask anyone in Texas about good barbeque and Riscky’s is on the top of the list. Founded by Polish immigrants Joe and Mary Riscky they first established a grocery store of the same name in 1927 called Riscky's Grocery & Market near the Fort Worth Stockyards. Nowadays, diners are still talking about the barbeque sauce as it is considered some of the best around and you can even purchase it to take home. The meat is slow-cooked at the original Azle Avenue location in the smoke pit and choices include beef and pork ribs, brisket and smoked catfish – served in large portions in a basket. The beef ribs are especially popular rubbed with “Riscky Dust” and served with Texas toast, a Texas size slice of onion, Polish pickle, jalapeno pepper and your choice of homemade potato salad, fresh coleslaw, seasoned red beans or home style fries. Don’t leave without trying dessert too from cobbler to pecan pie to banana pudding. Catering and takeout is also an option, but the experience at Riscky’s is what most serious barbeque eaters just can’t pass up.

This is a casual and friendly barbeque joint that really serves barbeque right and has been around since 1941 doing it. The restaurant was founded in a one-room building in downtown Dallas with sawdust on the floor and a choice of beef brisket, ham and ribs. Franchises have grown around the country, but the Texas Dickey’s still hold the atmosphere that is so much a part of the barbeque experience. Choose from takeout, delivery or dine in and make sure you opt for dessert at the end of the meal.
Nowadays, there are eight meats and 16 homemade vegetables to choose from on the menu, but the beef brisket is still cooked in the pit overnight for up to 14 hours.

Sonny Bryan’s is another one of those landmark Dallas/Fort Worth barbeque joints that has been written about for years and with good cause. Since 1910 when the owner moved from Ohio to Texas and opened his first restaurant in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas mouthwatering barbeque has been the trademark. Just like the good old days you can still get ice-cold colas in the bottle. The smokehouse meat is sausage, ribs, turkey, beef brisket, pulled pork or ham. Sides are standard fare too, but it will be hard to choose from the BBQ beans, potato salad, cole slaw, mashed potatoes or okra. Save room for dessert too as the cobbler is out of this world.

Down home cooking in the middle of Dallas proper, Back Country Bar-B-Q has been offering above-grade beef along with yummy sides like corn on the cob, baked beans, macaroni salad and fried okra since the mid-70s. Dinners come with two sides and Texas toast or you can try the two or three meat combo. Sandwiches are served with warm buns making the meal melt in your mouth and the regular choices for both the dinners and sandwiches include sausage, hot links, turkey, chicken, beef or ribs. The daily specials come with sides as well and at great prices, but be sure and save room for the tasty pecan pie to finish it all off before a long nap.

Pappas Bar-B-Q
2231 West Northwest Highway
Dallas, Texas 75220
(214)956-9038
Hours: (Sun) 11 am – 9:30 pm; (Mon – Fri) 6 am – 10 am and 11 am – 9:30 pm except Friday 10:30; (Sat) 11 am – 10:30 pm
Opening in 1967, Pappas was first opened in Houston by a Greek immigrant family of the same name, but back then it was called The Brisket House. It wasn’t until 1996 that the named was changed to Pappas and later still, it wasn’t until 2005 that the Dallas location on Northwest Highway was added. However, with 40 years of experience already under their belt, the Pappas family knows how to make Bar-B-Q no matter where they are cooking it. The ribs and brisket are slow-smoked to perfection and sides are made from scratch every day. The homemade Bar-B-Q sauce with a touch of smoky taste has become so popular that diners come in and ask for it by name. Sides are different with items like spicy beans, yams and cucumber salads. For dessert it’s either cheesecake or pecan pie, but with either one you can’t go wrong. Mornings are also popular at Pappas where breakfast is served with menu items such as Chorizo and Egg or Barbecoa as the popular favorites.

Angelo’s Barbeque
2533 White Settlement Road
Fort Worth, Texas 76107
(817)332-0357
Hours: (Mon – Sat) 11 am – 10 pm
Angelo’s serves the lunch and dinner crowd, but take note credit cards are not accepted. Casual like most barbeque joints, chicken and ribs are only served until they run out for the day. Indeed, you can count on lip smacking smoked ribs or other dishes in a less-than-fussy environment that has been going since 1958. The place originally began as a beer hall with the barbeque an afterthought so patrons would consume more alcohol. Now, years later the food has been recognized by many top Texas magazines. When you step inside you can’t help but notice the walls that are covered with the likes of moose, buffalo and deer. Meals include pork ribs, sausage, brisket, ham and chicken and that comes with potato salad, cole slaw and beans. The barbeque is prepared with the founder’s own seasoning and slow-smoked over a hickory fire for a taste that is supremely hometown.

Also serving early morning breakfast that is inexpensive and worth the stop, you get choices like pancakes with eggs and bacon and hash browns, biscuits and gravy or breakfast burritos. The all you can eat ribs Monday to Thursday after 5 pm is another good option, but remember no doggie bags. The menu offers all the typical barbeque fixings and the sandwiches are a good choice – especially the sliced beef brisket. The Supreme Baked Potato is a meal itself and comes with butter, sour cream, meat and is covered with BBQ sauce, cheese and chives. There are also a few vegetarian options on the menu, almost unheard of at most local barbeque joints.
