While we all savor the fine flavors of costly reduction sauces and food with French names we can't pronounce, there comes a time when we crave nothing more than thick, greasy fries, a cheesy pizza, or a simple plate of pasta, all at a great price. Fortunately, Salt Lake is full of restaurants offering tasty food that won't make a serious dent in your wallet!

No where else in Utah can you find such an eclectic and inviting tea room. Locally owned and operated by Lisa Brady, Beehive Tea Room specializes in delectable teas, coffees, smoothies, hot chocolate, and sodas. Equally as impressive as the beverages is the food. Make reservations for afternoon tea and enjoy a delicious and light hummus sandwich with cucumber and tomatoes, the soup du jour, seafood salad sandwich, or spinach artichoke sandwich. With the motto "Good For What Ales You" beer is obviously a house favorite here. Brewmaster Jennifer Yohe keeps six regular creations and several special microbrews on tap to match the traditional pub fare. Pizzas, fish and chips, bangers & smashers as well as jambalaya and blackened salmon salad are just a few of the varied menu items. Drop by for an appetizer, perhaps calamari, hummus, buffalo wings, or black bean nachos and wash it down with a St. Provo Girl or an Emigration Amber Ale. If that isn't enough, the Monday Night Barbeque and lively patio area always offer a good time.

As the undisputed king of moles, Blue Iguana prides itself on serving fresh authentic Mexican food, and lots of it. Seafood, particularly shrimp, is regularly featured and is complemented by the full-service bar. The secluded downtown location in Arrowpress Square offers live music (Mexican love songs) on Friday and Saturday nights. Around the corner on West Temple, Blue Iguana Expresso is open 24 hours a day, and offers a limited menu of fast and fresh food as well as coffee.

As the name implies, Salt Lake Pizza & Pasta specializes in just that. Pizzas include a Cajun shrimp pizza, five-cheese, or a barbecue pizza. The sun dried tomato chicken linguini or hot wings round out the menu of American favourites. To complete the meal, choose from a fabulous cheesecake selection and one of 20 wines at the full-service bar. Open since 1992, Salt Lake Pizza & Pasta has quickly become a Sugar House icon; expect to encounter families, professionals, and academia (college students and their professors).

Voted best takeout and best pot stickers by Salt Lake locals, Sampan offers a great selection of fresh, well-prepared Chinese food. Try the paper-wrapped chicken, cream cheese wontons, or hot and sour soup for starters. Snowball shrimp and sesame chicken are two favourite entrees. Although Sampan does deliver to a limited area, the restaurant itself is clean, modern, and inviting despite its strip mall location.

Desert Edge was recently awarded Salt Lake magazine's prestigious dining award for Best Salt Lake City Brew Pub. Known for its daily pasta salads and lunch menu that gets better after 2 pm, Desert Edge serves the usual pub fare as well as sandwiches with a side of fresh fruit, pasta, or salad. Customer favorites include the nachos and French onion soup. For refreshment, try the silver medal-winning Latter Days Stout or the gold medal Happy Valley Hefeweisen which are both always on tap.

For 30 years, Gepetto's has been serving pizza, pasta, and sandwiches a little differently. Owner John Sinclair believes that the atmosphere is the most important aspect of the restaurant and prides himself in offering nightly entertainment and superior service. In addition, the dough, sauces, and even cucumber, bleu cheese, and thousand island dressings are freshly made from scratch. Try the chef salad, California garlic pizza, and any of 12 sandwiches. Wash it down with a beer from a variety of local microbrews.

At the top of Park City's historic Main Street, Wasatch Brew Pub is a favorite of locals and tourists. Not the usual pub food, this restaurant serves pine nut-crusted salmon, Utah rainbow trout, beer-battered fish and chips, Louisiana Cajun shrimp, and a hard-to-describe ginger stout cake made with Wasatch's own Irish Stout. Nine other beers are also brewed on the premises so everyone is guaranteed to find something to their taste.

Open for less than a year, this neighborhood restaurant offers fresh, simply presented, Italian-inspired food. The beet salad and spinach salad with candied walnuts and sun-dried cherries lend themselves to entrees including wood-oven roasted clay pot mussels in a saffron broth, and whole fish grilled and then finished in the wood-oven. Complete the meal with the vanilla bean crème brulee or a seasonally inspired crisp (strawberry rhubarb for example).

Barbecue is obviously the specialty here and the hickory-smoked ribs shouldn't be passed up, but the nightly specials, usually a pasta, 2 or 3 fish dishes, several salads, and a steak special add to the mix of southern, down home cooking choices. Try the hot wings for starters, then the chicken fried chicken or rib and chicken combo and finish with the pecan pie if you're looking for true heaven on a plate.
