This wonderfully little cozy restaurant serving French bistro style food has been one of the best kept secrets in San Francisco for a long time. Nestled in the Castro District, Cote Sud caters to an eclectic crowd of folks who love great food without the crazy San Francisco prices. For just $27.50, you can get a three-course menu that is exceptional. With a wine list consisting of more than 180 vintages, you’ll always find the right vino to accentuate your meal. Specialties of the house include the Medallion de Rotl de Porc, an amazing dish of roasted natural pork medallions with a walnut crust and a tarragon sauce; the Lapin, a braised rabbit with an olive and cream sauce; and the Roasted Rack of Lamb. Everything is superb, memorable and priced right at Cote Sud.

Andalu has it all – a great menu, an incredible wine list, attentive service and an atmosphere that is a feast for all the senses. Highly regarded Chef Calvin Schneiter has assembled a wide range of small plate offerings that are creative and inspirational and can be shared and sampled without injuring you wallet or immobilizing your credit card. Signature dishes include Ahi Tartar Tacos with Chili and Lime and a Mango Salsa; Curly Polenta Fries with a Spicy Tomato Vinaigrette; Coca-Cola Braised Ribs; and Duck Confit Dumplings. Andalu is a little gem with big aspirations and exciting food.

Although its interior is a tad rundown, Aux Delices has long been a popular choice for beautifully prepared, delicious French-Vietnamese food. There are close to 70 items on the menu, most priced at less than $6. A good starter is the shrimp-lemon soup, followed by pan-fried, marinated catfish or succulent pork in caramel sauce. There¹s rarely a wait and the service is cheerful and friendly.

If you've lived in San Francisco for more than a couple of years you've probably been to Bill's. The smell of frying onions and burgers wafts down Clement Street blocks away. Whether you¹re ready for an ample late morning breakfast of bacon and eggs or a juicy hamburger, hand-cut French fries and a creamy, rich milkshake for lunch, dinner or in between, you¹ll find it at Bill¹s. Soups, salads, turkey burgers and chicken breast sandwiches are also on the menu. Children enjoy playing on Bill's tiny back patio and are welcomed with crayons and paper the minute they sit down.

Unpretentious, bustling Capp's Corner has been serving hearty, family style Italian food since 1960. Located in San Francisco¹s North Beach, the closest thing the city has to a "Little Italy," Capp's dishes out such favorites as spaghetti with meatballs, cheese ravioli marinara, lasagna and veal Milanese. For $16.50 diners can have bread and butter, soup, salad, pasta and vegetables and spumoni for dessert. Kids under $10 can get a smaller version for $12.00.

"Il pollaio" is "the chicken" in Italian, and that's what this tiny North Beach restaurant is known for. Il Pollaio's dining room, with big windows that look out on Columbus Avenue, is usually full of happy diners watching the huge grill where chicken, lamb chops, steak and burgers are turned until they're crispy on the outside and juicy within. The chicken is the standout dish, cut up, marinated in lemon and pepper and charbroiled, served with bread and butter and a green salad or French fries. All items can be ordered to go.

If you love Middle Eastern food such as hummus, dolmas and tabbouleh, La Mediterranee is the right place to go. Both locations are small and can feel a bit cramped when crowded, but the flavorful food and quick service shine. Levant sandwiches layered with cream cheese, greens and other fillings, lamb kabobs, and chicken wrapped in phyllo with cinnamon, almonds and chickpeas are all favorites, not to mention the sinful honey baklava for dessert.

San Francisco's Mission District is bursting with taquerias, but those in the know say that the burritos at La Taqueria have all the rest beat.Diners have a choice of grilled beef, pork, chicken or sausage, with plenty of fresh, tasty condiments. The quesadillas and tacos are just as good. Although the restaurant doesn't have much in the way of ambience, and the jukebox is loud, what you'll remember are the aromas and flavors of Mexico.

For a slightly gourmet take on the basic hamburger, you can¹t do much better than Mo's. You can start your meal with a crisp green salad and embellish your burger with bacon, cheese, avocados or caramelized onions and other toppings. If you're really hungry, order Mo¹s garlic fries or onion rings and a creamy milkshake on the side. Lighter fare includes Cesar salads and grilled chicken. The Folsom Street location is above a bowling alley, next door to an ice-skating rink and playground, and offers outdoor dining with a view of downtown San Francisco.

Ever since its first location opened a couple of years ago, Zao has been cheerfully serving a variety of noodle-based dishes that are both tasty and for the most part, healthful. Zao¹s noodle bowls are rich with broth and ingredients including shrimp, chicken and vegetables, spiced with curry, lemongrass and coconut. Zao has several appetizers such as spring rolls and satays, and entrée salads and stir-fries, all featuring, you guessed it: noodles! Rice plates are also on the menu.
