Champagne wishes and caviar dreams.
by Barrett Brown & Ron Good
Nothing compliments a weekend in Dallas/Ft. Worth like a Sunday brunch. Champagne, grapes, wine, and cheeses are just a cluster of the magnificent choices one can expect. Sprawled out like Roman feasts, brunches are the cream of the crop when it comes to high class dining at diminutive pricing.

Uptown-area professionals with a penchant for leisurely breakfasts, long menus, and nuanced egg dishes make up the bulk of the clientèle at Bread Winners. Here, brunch offerings run the gamut from omelets (known as “scrambles,” and available in heart-friendly egg white-only versions), banana bread French toast, and muffins to such less orthodox items as smoked salmon bagels with tomato, red onion, capers, and herb cream cheese. Vegetarian offerings abound – one breakfast casserole includes asparagus, artichoke hearts, spinach, and broccoli. During temperate months, the restaurant's patio ranks among the hottest spots in Dallas... figuratively.

Since 1986, City Cafe has been drawing in consistent crowds from the Park Cities and elsewhere with a combination of understated environs and rotating menu. The permanent brunch offerings are relatively traditional, although each possesses enough trademark flourish to remain memorable - buttermilk pancakes, orange French toast, and notoriously intricate omelets making use of obscure varieties of cheese are among the most popular items. Slightly more unusual offerings include the City One and One, consisting of one egg Benedict and one poached egg served on a crab cake alongside fried potatoes.

Though Hotel Zaza's award-winning restaurant does indeed feature such traditional breakfast items as pancakes with Vermont maple syrup and apple pastries, weekend brunch tends to veer less towards breakfast than it does lunch. Representative of the menu is the sun dried tomato and cheese ravioli with basil pesto cream and artichokes, as well as the grilled ginger beef with wasabi slather, sesame whipped potatoes, and broccolini & Shiitake demi. And beyond mere mimosas, Dragonfly recommends its Red Resurrection as the “ultimate hangover cure;” it's a modified Bloody Mary mixed with Red Bull.
