Everyone knows that good sushi is hard to come by. Nothing beats a fresh, high quality piece of sushi. The Metro Detroit area has its share of reputable sushi bars from reasonably priced carryout to fine dining with authentic Japanese, Chinese or Korean cuisine.

Musashi is known for its traditional Japanese food served in a modern, relaxed atmosphere. Musashi has built its reputation for top notch sushi since it opened in 1985. It is family owned and they pride themselves on authentic cuisine. The imported Japanese décor adds to the authenticity. Wall partitions create an added level of intimacy. Private dining rooms are available, as well as private rooms for catered parties. Musashi has a beautiful atrium that can be rented for parties. They serve a multi-course Japanese meal. A popular choice of appetizers is the Sushi Boat for two. It offers a sampler of sushi and includes soup and a house salad. The Japanese lunch box service is a great carryout item for lunch. They also offer sushi classes for groups of six or more.

Mon Jin Lau is a fine dining Chinese restaurant. The tables are lined with white linen, but the atmosphere is trendy with modern décor. One reason customers fall in love with Mon Jin Lau is their Nu Asian choices. They are home to many less common Chinese dishes. The food is delicate, yet filling. A few of their specialty sushi rolls include: the rainbow roll, dragon roll, spicy fish roll and special eel roll with seasoned seaweed. Their more traditional sushi choices are salmon, octopus, squid, sweet tofu and tuna rolls.

Shiro is a unique mix of Japanese and French cuisine. What’s even more unique is the setting. It is housed in a historical mansion that was built in 1929. It has cozy fireplaces and dining rooms on multiple floors that create a level of intimacy. The mansion also has a gorgeous grand stairway. Shiro offers some unusual sushi choices and special dipping sauces that put soy sauce to shame. Some of the choices include: red snapper, BBQ river eel, fried tofu, salmon skin roll, spider roll and a variety of spicy rolls. House specialties include the: super dragon, tiger roll, Hawaiian roll, shiro roll, spicy shrimp and crab roll and the dynasty roll. The sushi prices range from $2-13. A sushi appetizer plate is $10. Though it is a pricy dinner spot, a seat at the sushi bar makes a great lunch date, for either business or casual. Dinner entrees include the: sesame crusted ani tuna, shrimp tempura, filet mignon, breast of Peking duck, and black bean tofu. The meals at Shiro meet the needs of vegetarians, meat-lovers and seafood enthusiasts alike.

Cherry Blossom offers authentic Japanese food and diverse menu choices. They serve top of the line, fresh sushi and have been noted for the best California roll. Sushi choices include: whitefish, shrimp, belly tuna, octopus, mackerel, sea urchin, snapper, gizzard shad and sea eel. The menu also features tuna, cucumber, pickle, plum, sea eel, salmon, shrimp tempura, Yellow Tail, caterpillar, spider and California rolls. They also offer a sushi dinner that includes your choice of a tuna or California roll. Cherry Blossom is located in West Oaks shopping center across from 12 Oaks Mall. Be prepared to wait for a table, especially on weekend nights.

New Seoul Garden is a large Korean restaurant with an extensive sushi menu. They offer tuna, shrimp, mackerel, scallions, squid, octopus, eel, crab, spider rolls and rainbow rolls. Other popular choices are the Bi Bim Bab, beef dumplings, spicy soup, raw fish with steamed rice and Korean BBQ. The restaurant is spacious with several dining rooms, featuring regular tables, tabletop barbeques and traditional Japanese seating on the floor. It is beautifully decorated and has a large indoor fish pond. The staff is attentive and each meal comes with a big display of food to sample. It is a great place to share a meal and experience something different. You never have to worry about waiting in line ay New Seoul.

There’s nothing more entertaining than a meal cooked at your table by a skilled chef. That’s exactly what you can expect at Samurai Steakhouse. They also serve top notch sushi. Their sushi sampler includes two yellow tails, 3 tuna, 3 salmon and one eel roll for $19.95. Others popular menu items include the spicy maki combo, love boat for two and the special boat that serves four. Their specialty rolls are cleverly titled, like the Virgin River roll, crunch roll, love roll, Yankee roll, crazy roll, terminator roll and the W. Bloomfield roll. The restaurant is decked out in traditional Japanese décor, paintings, a bridge and hibachi grill stations.

Yotsuba offers traditional Asian fare in a fine dining setting. The menu features Japanese beer, sushi, sashimi and tempura items. The restaurant has a modern feel to with both Japanese booths and a sushi bar. The owner, Ann Lin, has decades of experience pleasing the palates of Detroiters. The name of the restaurant literally means “four leaf clover” and this restaurant has surely been Lin’s good luck charm. A popular menu choice is the sushi boat with huge portions of rolls, sashimi and nigiri sushi on a wooden boat-shaped platter. The spicy tuna and spicy California rolls are highly recommended.

Noble Fish is a Japanese market with a small sushi bar in the back. It is the best Sushi in the Detroit area for the money and it is a great place for a beginner to learn about sushi. The menu gives clear ingredient lists so you know exactly what you are ordering (no need to rely on the recommendation of a waitress here.) The sushi is fresh and the portions are generous. The small dining area with only eight tables fills up fast, but it is always a good place for carryout. Or you can take it to the next level and buy your own supplies to create custom made sushi or your own. Noble Fish also sell Japanese beer, such as Sapporo, Asahi and several kinds of Saki, the perfect addition to your sushi meal.

Oslo brings a new dining experience to Detroit. It is a one-of-a-kind combined sushi bar and hip nightclub spanning two levels. It has a very modern feels with dark, textured walls and fish-shaped light fixtures. The chefs like to put a new creative spin on Japanese favorites. They have some unusual menu items, but don’t expect to see authentic Japanese sushi here. Oslo offers a modern sushi bar in a stylish setting with techno tunes. The atmosphere attracts a younger crowd, but it fills the need for a sushi bar in Downtown Detroit.

Bi Bim Bab is a Korean restaurant with BBQ specialties located in an office and restaurant center on Main Street, just across the freeway from 12 Oaks Mall. The staff is always friendly and attentive. The restaurant has two dining rooms set apart by a bar with a modern, relaxed feel. A popular choice is the tabletop Korean BBQ. They also have an impressive list of fresh sushi. They serve large portions of fresh raw fish. It is a nice after-work stop and post-shopping watering hole. Parking is available in front of the office center or in the free underground parking deck under the building.
