www.beatriceandwoodsley.comMy husband surprised me for my birthday last night and took me to Beatrice and Woodsley. I’ve been fortunate to eat in some truly phenomenal restaurants in different parts of the globe, but this is in the top five of all time. It has the most distinctive décor I’ve ever seen, with a sort of wedding for a wood nymph vibe. There are Aspen trunks from floor to ceiling to make you feel like you’re in a forest, and sheer white fabric draped between the intimate booths. The “small plate” menu offers perfect little creations. I’m a vegetarian, and was delighted at how many options I had. The waiters kept bringing fabulous little dishes – and describing the ingredients, a reminder that I really appreciated. We had a cup of the soup of the day, an Heirloom tomato that was beautifully layered, followed by Confit potato pave ($12), olive oil poached potato layered with sunchoke and parsnip purees, asparagus and braised romaine. Then we had “Pretty as a Peacake” ($12), slow cooked black-eyed peas, spinach and fried green tomato with a celery, sweet corn broth. The waiter thoughtfully brought our “Soft-Core Cornography” last because it was almost a dessert – sweet corn pots de crème with horchata froth and polenta frits ($9). Eveything tasted exquisite, and the service was impeccable. I’m told that usually there is a long wait for space in the small restaurant, so reservations are strongly encouraged – the secret is out! Open for dinner nightly 5 p.m., brunch 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Sat/Sun, British tea 2-4 p.m. Sat/Sun.
